Calligraphic hand, apparently autograph: the forms of the letters seem identical with those in the signature "J C Kunze D.D. New York", found on inside front cover, although the signature seems to have been written later in Kunze's life, with a somewhat trembling hand.

John C. Kunze was born in Saxony at Artern on the Unstrut and graduated from the University of Leipzig in 1763. He came to America in 1770 to assume a pastorate in Philadelphia, Pa. under the tutelage of Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg, the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America. In 1784, Kunze moved to New York City and served as pastor of Christ Church, located at the corner of William and Frankfort streets.
